China: Animal Abuse In The Zoo

Documentary photo story posted on 30 May 2010 by Rafael Ben-Ari

Many wild animals in zoos in China spend their entire lives in enclosures so small they can barely move. Spectators take full advantage of the zoos understaffing and routinely throw food and drinks at the animals, shouting at them to get their attention. The lack of animal rights has long been a focus of critics all over the world. But up until today, no legislation has been put in place to prevent the cruelty and abuse of animals, including those that are endangered. Many captive animals in China are abused, starved or overworked, which eventually leads to their death. Photo by Rafael Ben-Ari/Chameleons Eye
