Photojournalism for a globalised world!

Love this photo: Outdoor portrait

Documentary photo story posted on 23 September 2009 by Morten Svenningsen

We have decided to try and create a more active blog here on Gaia Photos. As the bunch of photojournalist / photo lovers we are, I think we can create some interesting themes here. One of the themes I’d like to see us blog about is news photos that we all encounter in our local newspapers around the world. So to kick this effort off, here’s one from today’s issue of Information - my favourite newspaper, Danish.

It’s a great and untraditional environmental portrait, taken by photographer Kristine Kiilerich, showing a lady standing in an intriguing outdoor scene. Really love the way the texture of her fluffy hair matches that of the bushes all around her. And all the out-of-focus branches hanging down gives it a mysterious and intriguing feel. There’s a certain sadness to the way the lady is looking down into the lake. Great capture.

See the photo here.

And great illustration to the story as well. It is a sad story indeed, being about a former drug addict who has had her child removed by the authorities. The child’s grandmother (in the picture) is now fighting in court to have child and mother re-united. Per default, they are not allowed to bring in any witnesses to testify for the mother (WTF Denmark?). And as it turns out, the psychologist who recommended the removal of the child was not properly qualified. Another psychologist, better qualified, actually came to the opposite conclusion, but at that time the decision had already been made…

Controversial subject, sad story, nice photo. Thumbs up for the photojournalistic work!
