About Gaia Photos

What’s In A Name?

  • “Gaia” was the name of the primal Greek goddess of the Earth.
  • In the 1960’s, James Lovelock used the name in his “Gaia hypothesis”, conceiving the Earth as a single super-organism.
  • The Gaia Movement is an international network of groups and individuals, sharing a concern for living in a more sustainable way on Earth.
  • Spelled Gaya, it is the place where the Buddha achieved his enlightenment 2.500 years ago.

What Is Gaia Photos?

  • For photographers and photojournalists around the world, Gaia is a platform and an opportunity to showcase their work to a broad audience.
  • For our audience, Gaia is a place to explore and discover the issues facing the diverse population and locations of our world, both near and far away.
  • For professional photo buyers, Gaia is a place to find international, in-depth, quality reporting from a vast pool of professional photojournalists who can also be contacted directly for commissioned work.

Our Mission

  • Our primary mission is to increase awareness about the challenges we are facing together on this planet and to promote understanding across all borders, physical or otherwise, of this world we share. As the motto of a great photojournalistic project in USA in the 1930’s was to “introduce Americans to America”, our mission is to “introduce the World’s population to the World”.
  • On a more down-to-earth note, our mission is also to promote quality and diversity in documentary photography. This, in a time of dwindling editorial budgets and mainstream media turning increasingly stereotypical, conflict-centric and populistic, putting celebrity news coverage above important life-and-death issues. With the formation of Gaia Photos, we hope to make it easier for media professionals to provide interesting, exciting and inspiring coverage to their readers – coverage of the wealth of themes that reflects the real lives of normal people around the world.

Our Aim

  • We aim to get contributions from all countries of the World, and to establish Gaia Photos as a well known brand, identified with quality documentary photo-reporting.

Our Vision

  • Gaia is a new name in the world of photography. In the first phase of our existence, we will concentrate on building up some great content and a great network of contributors and audiences.
  • Over time we would also like to see Gaia Photos develop into a forum of photographers collaborating on international projects, providing a unique multi-point coverage for the editorial market that is often appropriate for the diverse and globalised world we live in.
